Photoshop’s Generative AI tool allows you to completely transform your photographs into artworks.
You can use Photoshop’s Generative AI to mimic a specific technique or material or integrate elements that recall a specific artistic style or time period.
In this article, I’ll show you how to create this effect and give you 35 prompts to stimulate your imagination.
How to Create an Art Style Effect in Photoshop?
For a long time, people who wanted to create art effects, such as turning a photo into a watercolor, had to follow a complex series of steps to achieve this in Photoshop.
Now, thanks to its Generative AI tools, you can easily apply all the art style effects you want to your photos in a couple of minutes.
Here’s how you do it.
Step 1
If you select the entire image and use the Generative Fill tool, the results may not match the original picture. So, you need to create a mask.
To do so, enter the Quick Mask mode by pressing the letter Q on your keyboard or clicking the Quick Mask icon at the bottom of the toolbar.
Step 2
You’ll know that you’re in Quick Mask mode because the layer in the Layers panel is now red.
While you’re here, go to the Edit > Fill menu. This will launch a pop-up window. In it, click the down arrow in Contents to open the drop-down menu and choose Color.
Step 3
When you choose to fill with Color, the Color Picker will pop up. Here, set the Hue and Saturation to 0%.
Then, set the Brightness to 40%. Anything below this percentage will make the mask too transparent to work.
You can experiment with a higher percentage, but the results are less predictable. As the percentage increases, the AI creates things that are further removed from your original – which isn’t the point of the art style effect.
Click OK on the Color Picker, and OK in the Fill dialog box. If you’re using 40%, you may get a notification that the Quick Mask may not be visible; don’t worry about this.
Step 4
As the warning said, the Quick Mask won’t be visible, but the layer will still be red in the Layers panel. Plus, you’ll notice that the Generative AI tool says Generative Expand.
So, step outside the Quick Mask using the keyboard shortcut or click the Quick Mask icon again.
Notice how the generative AI now says Generative Fill – click on it.
You can type the prompt you want here. In the next section, I’ll give you some examples.
Remember that once you get the results, you also get variations to choose from in the Properties panel. You can further modify the one you choose to make it your own.
