Blackmagic has taken mobile filmmaking by storm and has challenged FiLMiC Pro’s dominance with their new Camera app for iOS. In a recent update, the company has expanded support for SLR camera lenses, extended lower ISO ranges, and a few other features that filmmakers will embrace.
Blackmagic’s new app offers the same intuitive and user-friendly interface as Blackmagic Design’s popular line of cinematic cameras and gives users the option to adjust settings such as frame rate, shutter angle, white balance, and ISO all in a single tap.

The high-performance app literally transforms Apple’s flagship mobile device into a professional digital film camera, and with the latest update, several new features boost that performance even higher.
Version 1.21 of the Blackmagic Camera app now gives mobile creators the option to flip the image both vertically and horizontally to take better advantage of the image circle from popular SLR lenses with a cinematic look, and broadcast quality.
This will provide aspect ratios that are popular with short-form social media outlets like Instagram and TikTok.
Moreover, Improved ISO controls now allow for expanded lower ISO ranges. Users can now adjust down to as low as ISO 21 and as high as 2116 simply by touching the ISO indicator and sliding the ISO to the desired range.
There is also expanded support for LUTs through improved handling when importing duplicate versions. Users now have the option to replace the existing LUT or save a duplicate copy to adjust and compare with.

Users can install these LUTs in the settings menu under LUT Selection. There will be an import LUT icon to install the proper CUBE file and a dedicated LUT folder to save files into. Once installed, the app will add an underscore plus number to differentiate the two.
There have also been some housekeeping improvements. On top of general stability and performance improvements, Blackmagic has addressed an issue with preview quality when switching phone orientation.
There was also an issue with audio sync when switching lenses during recording that Blackmagic has shored up.
Download and installation
The Blackmagic Camera app is available on iOS exclusively at this juncture, and the version 1.21 update can be downloaded from the iOS App Store.
