In the wake of OM Digital Solution’s impending February 26th launch of its new OM-1 Mark II camera, many OM-1 owners were left wondering if their older models could have gotten improvements too.
OM Digital has now responded. The company has announced a new firmware update for the original OM-1 camera (released in March of 2022) and it delivers improved processing power and memory.
According to a press release from OM Design, “Since the announcement of the OM System OM-1 Mark II interchangeable lens camera on January 30, there have been many inquiries regarding the possibility of a firmware update to the OM System OM-1 (released March 2022),”
The company then adds that they’re planning a near-future firmware update for exactly this proposition.
Unfortunately, if you happen to own one of OM Design’s OM-1 cameras, you’ll have to wait a few more months, since the update isn’t slated for release until autumn.

However, when it does arrive, the firmware will let owners of these older models enjoy notable improvements in AF performance and user interface controls.
Specifically, OM states that its AF improvements for the firmware will deliver better S-AF and C-AF performance in all-target mode while also generally making AF better in the camera.
As for the UX update, it will mainly let users assign their “trash” button as a menu access shortcut for more quickly deleting unwanted files.
In the newer OM-1 Mark II, both of these features are already baked in.
With all that said, the OM-1 Mark II delivers many of its performance improvements via hardware, not just software. Thus, no, the free firmware for the older camera won’t make it quite as good as the Mark II edition.
Moreover, the OM-1 Mark II offers very useful features such as AI detection for human bodies and Live GND (Graduated Neutral Density) for adjusting the brightness of shot exposure during shooting via touch control.

OM emphasizes that in general, the performance of the Mark II is better across the board regardless of firmware update for the original OM-1.
Both cameras do however come with the same sensor type and sensor size. They also deliver the same maximum shooting speed and core video recording specs.
With this firmware, owners of the OM-1 won’t have to feel entirely left behind and the new improvements for the device will beef up performance and shooting quality.
The OM-1 is also a cheaper option than its successor if you’re a fan of this brand and want a quality bestseller. It retails for $1,999 vs. the preorder retail price of $2,399 for the Mark II.
