Venus Optics has announced a new wide-angle lens which the company says is the first autofocus rectilinear lens available.
Designed to celebrate the company’s 10th anniversary, the Laowa 10mm F2.8 zero D FF Autofocus Lens offers focus tracking for both still and video applications and is available in both Nikon and Sony lens mount configurations, with a manual-only RF and L mount design also available.

“We are proud to introduce our first auto-focus lens in the Laowa lens lineup our signature Zero-D feature, an ultra-short 12mm close focusing distance, and versatility,” states the Venus Optics Website.
“This lens is a game-changer in its class … this lens is nothing short of superb, rivaling some of the best in the market.”

With an optical design that includes 15 lens elements organized into nine groups, the Laowa 10mm F2.8 zero D FF Autofocus Lens has six ultra-high refractive lens elements, three extra-low dispersion elements, and two aspherical glass elements in the optical array.
The lens has a five aperture lens aperture diaphragm that produces a 10-point Sunstar bokeh effect., while the manual variants provide either 5 or 14 aperture blades.
The lens enjoys pinpoint light imaging and an ultra-wide field of view of 130 degrees, with ”close to no” distortion and an ultra-bright image frame.
This makes it ideal for everything from landscape and architectural photography to low-light astrophotography.

Overall, the lens is less than 3 inches long, and features a 77mm filter thread, while weighing less than a pound.
This compact design promises to keep the focus on subjects as close as 4.7 inches away while maintaining sharp and accurate depictions with no distortion that can be viewed in real-time with no post-production.
As mentioned above, the Laowa 10mm F2.8 zero D FF Autofocus Lens is supported with both Nikon Z and Sony E mounts, but a manual focus version of the lens is also available for L-Mount and Canon RF mounts. The latter is due to Canon’s restrictive protection of their mirrorless RF lens mount design.
Pricing and availability:
The Venus Optics Laowa 10mm F2.8 zero D FF Autofocus Lens is available for preorder at a retail price of $799 for both autofocus and manual variants. Shipping is scheduled for mid-March of 2024.
