WhatsApp Beta Updates: Transcribe Voice Notes, Video Status Updates, Channels List, And More

[ad_1]

The Meta-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp is working on a slew of new features that could make their way to future app updates. For instance, the app recently submitted a new beta update through the Google Play Beta Program, revealing a feature that transcribes voice notes. In another update, the app is testing uploading one-minute videos as Status updates. Elsewhere, the app is also developing a shortcut for scanning UPI QR codes, a feature specific to Indian users, where the digital payment method is prevalent.

WhatsApp Might Allow Users To Transcribe Voice Notes Soon

The WhatsApp beta for Android v2.24.7.8 contains a feature that allows users to transcribe voice notes. It uses the phone’s speech recognition to provide end-to-end encrypted transcripts. However, users must download 150MB of new app data to enable the feature, ensuring the transcription occurs locally on the device. “Once the supplementary package is downloaded, WhatsApp will integrate transcriptions into message bubbles, ensuring that users can easily read voice messages even in situations where they can’t play audio,” reads the latest report by WABetaInfo.

The feature enhances accessibility for users with hearing impairments. It also enables users in noisy environments where the speaker isn’t loud enough or, on the other hand, in quiet environments where they can’t play the audio. Moreover, transcribing voice messages is an alternate way of staying connected with the people users want to.

WhatsApp beta for iOS v24.6.10.72 is testing a new feature enabling users to reply to announcements in community groups. “With the introduction of the announcement reply feature, participation is no longer limited to administrators,” mentions the report. It also adds that “anyone can now engage actively by replying to messages within these groups and read replies shared by other community members,” given that the group has less than 1024 members.

One-Minute Video Status Is Under Development

In another report, the WhatsApp updates tracker mentions about one-minute status updates, a feature spotted in the app’s beta for Android, v.2.24.7.6. Previously, the video status length was limited to 30 seconds. However, the app can increase this to 60 seconds or one minute in a future update. This particular feature results from consistent user demand, as a 30-second status limit could be very restricting, especially for users who like to share memories with their friends and family. Currently, this feature, like the others, is available to some beta testers.

WhatsApp beta for iOS v24.6.10.71 is exploring a new interface for the Channels list. In the screenshot shared by the publication, the app seems to have removed the media preview from the cell and replaced the section with one that’s more like the regular chat section. If the new Channels list interface rolls out, it will provide users with a uniform experience across the app, whether for one-to-one communication or one-to-many broadcasts.
