All good things must come to an end, and a little over two years after its debut, OpenAI is shutting down the DALL-E 2 image generator in favor of its successor.DALL-E 2 took the world by storm in April 2022 thanks to its ability to generate impressively high-quality images from simple text prompts. A few months later, OpenAI opened the beta to a broader audience, and things really started to take off. But it’s since been eclipsed by DALL-E 3, which includes full integration with ChatGPT, making for a simpler interface that produces even better images. That’s the main reason for the change, but the warning signs were there. While you can easily log in to ChatGPT in one step, DALL-E 2 required a few more clicks. Even using the OpenAI login page didn’t take you to DALL-E 2. But go to DALL-E 2 today, and you’ll be greeted by a message: “We are no longer allowing new users to DALL·E 2. DALL·E 3 has higher quality images, improved prompt adherence, and we’ve started rolling out image editing. It is available for ChatGPT Plus, Team and Enterprise and the OpenAI API.”You also won’t find a text box for entering prompts. Click on your profile photo, and you’ll likely have zero credits, so you can’t generate new images.

OpenAI warns as much on its support pages: “Starting on February 21, 2024, DALL·E 2 is no longer accepting new customers. Free and paid users who have never had any credits (free or paid) cannot purchase credits. Labs users who have had credits before (even if you currently have 0 credits) can still use Labs normally.”Oddly, despite saying this change occurred on Feb. 21, the support page was only updated a week ago. But either way, you can’t create new images in the DALL-E 2 interface anymore. Thankfully, you can still get to your history. But you might want to download anything you’re particularly fond of, just in case. And for everything else, head to ChatGPT and call up DALL-E 3. You’ll get better results anyway.
