Netflix is always adjusting its offerings, adding new content to draw in prospective subscribers. But to make room for the fresh stuff, some of the stuff you’ve always wanted to watch—and have had in your to-watch list for months—has to vanish from the service. That’s because Netflix doesn’t own all the content it streams. The contracts it has with networks, production companies, and movie studios mean much of that externally-made programming comes and goes all the time. So each month, we keep you up to date with a list of what’s leaving the service, for Netflix veterans as well as those who are just signing up. We’ll highlight our top choices for what you should view in May before it’s too late, and after that, we’ll share the full list.Uncut Gems (May 8)
When we look back on film history, Uncut Gems is going to be seen as the kind of “pivot movie” that marked a change in Adam Sandler’s career. Sure, he’s done roles outside of his usual comfort zone before, but none hit quite as powerfully as his turn as a gambling-addicted jewelry dealer in the Safdie Brothers breakthrough flick. This is one of the tensest and most unsettling movies of recent years, as Howard Ratner makes the worst possible choice over and over again.Rosario Tijeras (May 19)
Netflix has a number of exciting south of the border drama shows, but Rosario Tijeras is one you might have missed. The titular character, played by Bárbara de Regil, is a young student who becomes a contract killer to get revenge on the criminals who terrorized her neighborhood and family. It’s definitely over-the-top at times, but it’s a great binge watch. All three seasons are leaving on May 19.The Hunger Games Movies (May 30)
It seems wild to think that the first Hunger Games came out in 2012, but the franchise is still kicking with the release of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes last year. If you want to indulge your early-2010s nostalgia and rewatch the original series, get to it quick because the first four films are all leaving Netflix at the end of May. There’s a lot to love about these adaptations, from the clever casting to the ridiculous costume design.Everything Leaving Netflix in May 2024
