An athletic director in Baltimore was arrested this week after authorities discovered he used artificial intelligence to create a fake “recording” that sounded like the school’s principal had made racist and antisemitic remarks.Dazhon Darien, 31, was arrested on charges of stalking, theft, disruption of school operations, and retaliation against a witness. The recording was circulated by Darien on social media and led to Principal Eric Eiswert being temporarily removed from his position as well as a wave of hate-filled calls and social media messages directed at the school.Baltimore police worked with the FBI to analyze the recording in question and determined that it was AI-generated content, an analysis that was later confirmed by a forensic analyst with the University of California, Berkeley.Authorities say Darien, who worked at Pikesville High School, created the recording to retaliate against Eiswert, who was investigating Darien’s alleged mishandling of school funds. Darien emailed the fake recording to three teachers, one of whom forwarded it to a student who she knew would circulate it to others.Darien was arrested at the airport after he attempted to board a flight while carrying a firearm. Authorities then discovered an existing warrant for his arrest, the Baltimore Banner reports.
