Make immersive Apple Vision Pro videos with just an Insta360 X4

If you have an Apple Vision Pro (seriously though, does anyone actually have one?!), you are probably thinking that there isn’t enough immersive content for it. You might be tempted to try making your own content for it. But how, when even Canon has told us that no camera on earth has enough resolution for the Apple gadget?

While Blackmagic is currently working on that with Apple, you probably aren’t going to drop how ever many thousands of dollars that camera costs to make home videos. However, you can try making them with an action camera like the Insta360 X4. This nifty little 360 camera packs a punch and shoots 8K video. It won’t be up to the highest specs of the Vision Pro, but it’ll still be pretty good, as this video from 9to5Mac shows us.

The steps are simple enough. Basically, you shoot a video on the Insta360 in 8K at 30fps. Use the Insta360 studio app to download and export the footage onto your desktop at the highest resolution and bitrate possible. From experience, the export will probably take a little while, so at this point, I can recommend making a cup of tea. Coffee would also work.

Once you have the exported file on your desktop, turn on the Vision Pro. You then just need to airdrop the file from your computer to the headset. You then need to download another app called MoonPlayer to watch your immersive video.

Easy right? Well… it doesn’t sound completely frictionless I have to admit. If you’ve spent $3000 plus on the Vision Pro I would expect and easier workflow to actually be able to create and watch videos that you’ve made.

I think it will happen and things will get easier, especially now Canon has opened the doors to more quality 3D VR video creation at a more affordable and easier level. This month, the new dual fisheye lens for the APS-C EOS R7 will be available to content creators who don’t want to drop $7000+ to make VR content.

Sure it won’t be as high spec as the Vision Pro can handle, we can leave that to the big boys at Blackmagic. However, I can see a lot more development in the VR and immersive video space as the year continues. And in any case, making this sort of content is a lot of fun!
