Star Trek: Discovery was one of the major reasons to subscribe to Paramount+ in the early days, so it’s nice to see all of the original Trek movies hitting in July. The service continues to add a solid slate of movies every month along with a handful of original shows and current-day TV hits like Spongebob. How has it taken this long for Paramount+ to get the rights to the big-screen outings of their flagship sci-fi series? Who knows, but on July 1, all of the Star Trek flicks up until 2002’s Nemesis will be streaming. These movies are certainly uneven, but there’s something to love in most of them, from the classic Trek actors aging with varying degrees of grace to the Next Generation crew getting a bigger budget to tell epic stories.Melissa Etheridge: I’m Not Broken (July 9)
If all you know about a musician is their hit songs, you’re missing a lot. New two-part docuseries Melissa Etheridge: I’m Not Broken casts a light on the roots-rock legend’s prison activism, as she makes connections with five women at a Kansas prison and teases out their stories of addiction and loss to learn more about their lives. She then transforms their tales into a new song and the inspiration for a tour.Mafia Spies (July 16)
The connections between the US government and organized crime have long been the talk of conspiracy theorists, but new docuseries Mafia Spies drags them into the light. When Castro’s Communist rule of Cuba started threatening American interests, the CIA spun out some bizarre plans to depose him.
