Ads are coming to Amazon Prime Video next month. In September, Amazon announced plans to bring ads to its streaming service “in early 2024,” and now we have an official date: Jan. 29.“This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time,” Amazon said in an email to customers, which promises “meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers.”Rather than create a lower-priced tier like some of its competitors, Amazon is instead adding a higher-priced tier that removes ads from the service, likely because Prime Video is included with standard Prime memberships. If you’re cool with the ads, there’s nothing you need to do, they’ll just appear on their own at the end of next month. If you’d rather continue with an ad-free experience, you can sign up for a new ad-free version of Prime Video for an additional $2.99 a month.

An Amazon Prime membership currently costs $139 a year or $14.99 per month. Customers who want access to just Prime Video can subscribe to the service for $8.99 a month. Original content isn’t cheap. Last year’s season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, for instance, reportedly cost the company $715 million.
