Apple Acquires DarwinAI To Checkmate Google and Microsoft

[ad_1]

Apple has made a strategic acquisition by taking over AI startup DarwinAI to strengthen its on-device AI capabilities and take on the likes of Google and Microsoft. While tech giants like Google and Microsoft have made strides in offering AI models that run on both cloud and devices, Apple’s acquisition of DarwinAI could give the company a competitive edge in on-device AI performance and efficiency.

DarwinAI specializes in developing AI systems that are smaller and faster, enabling them to run efficiently on devices rather than relying solely on cloud computing. This aligns with Apple‘s focus on implementing AI directly on its devices, such as iPhones and Macs, rather than primarily relying on cloud-based AI services.

The acquisition, which occurred earlier this year, brings dozens of DarwinAI employees into Apple’s AI division, including the startup’s co-founder and AI researcher Alexander Wong, who has joined Apple as a director.

“DarwinAI has developed AI technology for visually inspecting components during the manufacturing process and serves customers in a range of industries,” the Bloomberg report stated. “But one of its core technologies is making artificial intelligence systems smaller and faster. That work could be helpful to Apple, which is focused on running AI on devices rather than entirely in the cloud.”

The move comes as Apple prepares to unveil several AI-powered services and products at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. These are expected to include upgrades to Siri, AI features in Messages and Apple Music, and AI capabilities on iPhones. Apple CEO Tim Cook has also teased that the company will “break new ground” in generative AI this year.

With the DarwinAI acquisition, Apple is doubling down on its efforts to bring advanced AI capabilities directly to its devices, potentially setting the stage for more powerful and efficient on-device AI experiences across its product lineup.
