Apple, Google, and Meta unite to make sure AI doesn’t outsmart us

[ad_1]

The latest Google Pixel 8 series and the Samsung Galaxy S24 series are heavily based on generative AI that helps these devices generate text, videos, photos, and whatnot using open-end user prompts. ChatGPT is a great example of what generative AI could do and we are just scratching the surface at the moment. Apple has also announced massive AI features by the end of this year. Its MLLM-based AI image editing model – MGIE, made its debut earlier on Thursday to edit images based on user prompts.

AI Safety is paramount because there’s always a flip side

People are concerned about the growing influence generative AI possesses. There’s also a threat to society that gen AI can be misused such as deepfakes.

Some skeptics think AI could surpass human abilities which could lead to a dystopian world where AI could take over. Although it might seem like a far stretch, more than 200 tech companies have come forward to sign up for the US AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC) introduced by US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo following US President Joe Biden’s October AI Executive Order.

This consortium aims to create guidelines and standards for red-teaming, evaluating capabilities, managing risks associated with AI, ensuring the safety and security of the users and other stakeholders as well as watermarking AI-generated content.

Meta has already announced it will start labeling content generated on AI posted on Threads, Facebook, and Instagram. The watermark will act as an indicator dictating the said content is AI-generated. Users will have to disclose AI content as such which could be videos and audio content. Those failing to comply with the new guidelines at Meta can be penalized.

The consortium will form the foundation needed for a new measurement science in AI safety. The consortium has 200+ members and organizations dealing with AI-users, creators, civil society organizations, academics, government, and industry researchers in a step to make AI trustworthy and safe to use.

Some of the well-known companies including Antropic, Microsoft, Alphabet’s Google, Meta Platforms, Apple, Bank of America, Nvidia, Palantir, JPMorgan Chase, Intel, Cisco Systems, Visa, Hewlett Packard, Mastercard, Qualcomm, Amazon.com, etc.
