Apple is officially allowing retro game emulators in the App Store.Apple made a number of changes to the App Store’s guidelines Friday to help it comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). Among those changes was the ability for game emulators to operate on its platforms for the first time.Initially spotted by 9to5Mac, Apple’s updated guidelines not only allow developers to create and distribute game emulators for iOS, but they also allow retro game emulator apps to offer downloadable games.The guidelines do; however, flag that anyone who creates an emulator app will be “responsible for all such software offered in your app, including ensuring that such software complies with these Guidelines and all applicable laws,” which the site suggests means that the emulators might ultimately only be able to be released by companies that own the rights to the games that can be played with them.In addition to the change to how the App Store handles game emulators, Apple also introduced new “Music Streaming Services Entitlements” for apps that are distributed in the EU. Those guidelines will allow music streaming apps in certain regions to include links, including buy buttons, that point to an external website.Earlier this month Apple was fined $1.9 billion by the EU for restricting music-streaming app developers from sharing subscription options outside of Apple’s App Store.
