Apple is reportedly nearing a deal with OpenAI that would bring ChatGPT to the iPhone. The two are hammering out details of an agreement that would bring the chatbot to iOS 18, according to Bloomberg, which cites people familiar with the matter. Apple is reportedly also in talks with Google to potentially use its Gemini AI in the iPhone, but no deal has been finalized.Though OpenAI is hosting a surprise event on Monday, it will focus on updates to ChatGPT and GPT-4. We won’t hear about iOS 18 until Apple’s Worldwide Developers conference (WWDC) next month, and the OS won’t roll out to everyone’s iPhones until the fall. Until then, OpenAI offers a ChatGPT app for iOS.Last week, we learned that iOS 18 may include the ability to summarize iMessages using artificial intelligence. That feature would work with longer text messages to parse “all available relevant information,” including any companies, people, or locations mentioned in a text. A similar feature for Safari would summarize web pages.

Apple is working on creating its own large language model (LLM) to power its AI that can run without a web connection. Doing so will allow the phone to respond faster as well as offer more privacy for users since requests will not need to be sent to a third party.
