One of Canon’s newest gadgets is a camera and range finder in one single combo that adds a unique spin to niche photography.
The new device is called the PowerShot Golf and though it’s designed with golfers in mind, creative photographers could almost certainly come up with some other uses for it.
If you are a golfer, however, the PowerShot is definitely a potential delight for your next excursion onto the green.
With Powershot Golf, Canon is making an interesting entry into the golf accessories market and joining other popular brands like Nikon in the same territory.
With this particular new device, users have a surprisingly advanced rangefinding mechanism that’s normally found in Canon’s binoculars with visual imaging technology but combined with a camera too.
Thus, with the PowerShot Golf, you can take rapid, accurate distance readings, take photos of your golfing (or whatever else you’re doing that needs a rangefinder) and fit the whole combo in your pocket.
For measuring distance, the PowerShot Golf uses a high-precision laser and a pin-locking function to zone in on an object to tell you its distance. It can also simply target the closest object in front of you if multiple possible objects are detected.
The optics of the PowerShot are pretty solid too. It offers crisp visuals, a 6x optical zoom and a further 12x of digital magnification in addition to that. Another feature is an internal optical image stabilization system.
The little device is also water-resistant to IPX4 standards and comes with an integrated rechargeable battery that can be charged back up through a USB-C port.
As for the camera in the PowerShot Golf, it’s nothing to write home about, but neither is it too shabby.
This device has a 1/3-inch CMOS Sensor with an effective resolution of 11 megapixels and a 4:3 aspect ratio. It can even record up to 59 seconds of video in 1080p HD resolution.
Canon is selling the PowerShot Golf as a preorder item at $349.99.
