LAS VEGAS—While 8K is still far from a viable consumer entertainment option, Samsung is furthering its efforts to make the higher-than-4K resolution available to home theater enthusiasts, and trusting its AI upscaling technology to make lower-resolution content appealing until 8K movies can be watched at home. The company announced two new 8K TV lines at CES here, along with an 8K home theater projector. The Neo QLED QN900D and QN800D are Samsung’s newest 8K TVs, offering a 7,680-by-4,320 picture in sizes ranging from 65 to 85 inches. The QN900D features the company’s updated 8K AI Upscaling Pro image processing engine for upconverting 4K video to 8K while retaining and refining detail, and also upconverting 480p, 720p, and 1080p content to 4K, where it is conventionally upscaled to fit the 8K panel without the AI features. The TV also supports variable refresh rate (VRR) at up to 240Hz, and has Samsung’s AI Motion Enhancer Pro motion processing feature for displaying fast sports content sharply. Like the QN900C before it, the QN900D uses a One Connect box to hold all of the TV’s ports and electronics, connecting to the panel through a single cable. The QN800D is a step-down model that lacks the AI upscaling features and only has a 120Hz refresh rate, making a more accessible 8K TV option available to consumers.Samsung also introduced The Premiere 8K projector, which the company says is the first 8K projector with wireless connectivity thanks to its own Wireless One Connect Box that can send a signal from up to 10 meters away. The Premiere 8K has a triple-laser light source with 4,000-lumen auto-brightness and can project a 150-inch picture from a foot away from the wall. Its audio system is also impressive, with 100W total output for 8.2.2 channels and support for Dolby Atmos spatial audio.

Samsung isn’t neglecting 4K home theater displays. The company also introduced several 4K TVs and projectors, including the top-of-the-line QN90D and QN85D Neo QLED TVs and S95D and S90D OLED TVs. The S95D stands out the most among them with an incredibly thin 11mm (0.43 inches) panel driven by a wired One Connect box. It’s also the first TV with Samsung’s OLED Glare Free technology for improving viewability in bright conditions.A new 4K projector is also among Samsung’s new announcements. According to Samsung, The Premiere 5 is the world’s most compact triple-laser short throw projector and touch interaction device, measuring 7.9 by 5.4 by 5.4 inches (HWD). It can project a 100-inch picture on a wall at at little as 17 inches away, and can offer touch-based interactivity using an included tabletop stand to project the picture downward on a horizontal surface. The Premiere 8K and The Premiere 5 are joined by revisions of Samsung’s established The Premiere 7 and The Premiere 9 4K ultra short-throw projectors. All 2024 The Premiere projectors incorporate a projection mapping feature called Lightwarp, which Samsung says can turn any object into an interactive display surface.

Samsung’s The Frame picture-frame-style lifestyle TV is also getting a 2024 update with Pantone Art Validated colors for better color accuracy when displaying digital artwork. Perhaps more interesting among Samsung’s picture frame-like devices, though, is the new Music Frame.Rather than a TV or digital photo frame, The Music Frame is a frame for conventional printed pictures that also serves as a home entertainment speaker. It features pairs of woofers, tweeters, and midrange drivers behind the picture, and can be paired with a second Music Frame for stereo sound, or up to four and a compatible Samsung TV for Dolby Atmos surround sound with automatic room calibration. It functions as a Bluetooth and Wi-Fi speaker as well, and has a built-in smart home hub for driving compatible Samsung SmartThings devices.Samsung didn’t announce pricing or availability for its new home entertainment devices.
