ChatGPT Might Get Easier to Use on Android: Can It Replace Google Assistant?

[ad_1]

ChatGPT is fun to use, but to interact with it on an Android device, you have to open the official app or go to the website on your mobile browser. By contrast, Google Assistant can launch with a hotkey or a wake word. Soon, ChatGPT might be able to do the same. As Android Authority reports, code within the latest version of the ChatGPT Android app includes partial code allowing it to act like a digital assistant. That means users would be able to activate ChatGPT instead of the Google Assistant with hotkeys and hotwords. The code is only partially complete, however, so even with tinkering, it’s not possible to see how it works. Android Authority also notes that a Quick Settings tile was added to the app, although it too is disabled for now. According to clues in the code, the Quick Settings tile may require a ChatGPT Plus subscription to use. Whether we’ll see these solutions is anyone’s guess. While code teardowns show a lot of information about what developers are working on, OpenAI could just as easily delete all of this stuff and simply not do it. There is no estimated date of completion on either of these features and OpenAI hasn’t made any announcements about them as of this writing. While it is interesting that ChatGPT is honing in on the digital assistant space, it likely won’t replace Google Assistant, which answers questions but can also control smart home tech. It’s also heavily integrated with Google’s core apps, allowing users to send texts and emails, or look up directions via Google Maps.

That said, ChatGPT could be a viable alternative for folks who don’t want or need such integrations and only want to talk to AI. Including such an option makes sense, especially considering that Google Assistant is getting an injection of Bard once Google concludes beta testing. Google’s Gemini update is also right around the corner, which stands to make Bard a lot more competitive with ChatGPT as well.
