You want your MTV News archive? Tough. MTV News stopped publishing in 2023 amid financial trouble for parent company Paramount Global, but the music site’s archive remained online—until now.The MTVNews.com URL now redirects to the main MTV.com homepage. At first glance, the move may seem inconsequential, but as Variety notes, the archive removal means a wealth of interviews and features about musical artists big and small from the past few decades are now inaccessible. Several former staffers, as well as music writers for other publications, expressed their disappointment about the removal on X Monday:

Last week, Paramount also removed the archives of CMT News.If you want to access the old content from either site, many of the articles can be found on internet archive sites such as the Wayback Machine, if you know what to search. Although, as one X user notes, major publishers and record labels are currently suing the archive site, so those articles might not be accessible forever.

The demise of MTV News’ archive is part of a larger trend in media. Writers have seen their work disappear from the web as parent companies consolidate, redesign websites, try to game Google Search, or avoid copyright complaints. In 2017, the Gothamist archive was temporarily deleted, while mass layoffs at Vice earlier this year had staffers scrambling to preserve their work.In May, the Pew Research Center found that 38% of web pages that existed in 2013 were no longer accessible in October 2023 and that a quarter of the pages that were online at some point over that period have now vanished.
