First-Ever Porsche 911 Hybrid May Finally Convince Gearheads Batteries Are Sexy

Porsche is offering a hybrid version of its iconic 911 sportscar for the first time ever. Porsche updated all variants of the 911, though just the Carrera GTS features the new powertrain, dubbed the T-Hybrid. It’s available to configure online for $164,900—a $44,800 premium over the $120,100 base model.”We developed and tested various ideas and approaches to decide on a hybrid system that optimally suits the 911,” says Frank Moser, vice president of the 911 and 718 model lines. “The result is a unique powertrain that is well-integrated into the overall concept and enhances the performance significantly.”

With the fresh dose of electricity comes more acceleration. The 911 Carrera GTS Coupe zooms from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds, or 0.3 seconds quicker than before, and achieves a top track speed of 194mph. The new system is more fuel-efficient, though deep-pocketed Porsche drivers aren’t likely to need the gas savings.A new 3.6-liter boxer engine combines with a “lightweight lithium-ion” battery for a power boost of 45kW (61 PS) over its predecessor. Without electrical assistance, that engine delivers 357kW (485 PS) and 570Nm of torque. Adding electricity brings that to 398kW (541 PS) and 610Nm. “The efficient performance hybrid achieves highly dynamic driving characteristics while at the same time reducing CO₂ emissions with significantly less extra weight compared to plug-in hybrid vehicles,” says Porsche. “The weight increase over its predecessor is a mere 50 kilograms.”

As for the dash tech, Porsche gave the 911 its first fully digital instrument cluster on its 12.6-inch curved display. Apple CarPlay is “more deeply integrated into the car” and now “enables the operation of vehicle functions directly in the Apple ecosystem.” Drivers can access Spotify and Apple Music as apps on the dash screen rather than having to connect a smartphone. Finally, video streaming is available when the vehicle is in park.

A few hardware adjustments make the 911 more intuitive to drive. “Essential controls” are now on the steering wheel, including drive mode switch, driver assistance lever, and a start button to the left of the steering wheel. The center console also features a new temperature-controlled storage compartment with wireless phone charging.

The first-ever hybrid 911 joins the first-ever hybrid Chevrolet Corvette, which is available now, as hybrid technology gets further and further from the practical-minded Prius that brought the technology to the masses.
