Following Mass Layoffs, Tesla Advertises AI Engineer Roles With $360K Salary

Tesla is hiring for a slew of AI-related positions, most of which offer six-figure salaries up to $360,000 plus benefits. Last month, CEO Elon Musk announced plans to lay off 10% of the company’s workforce, or around 14,000 jobs, following poor Q1 financial results. He promptly eliminated the 500-person team behind Tesla’s popular Supercharger network. Some of those cost savings appear to be going toward AI and autonomous driving positions. The company’s career site lists around 20 new engineering roles, including two internships, all based in Palo Alto, California. Job titles include phrases such as self-driving, AI tooling, 3D computer vision, AI infrastructure, and simulations. But it’s not all AI; Tesla is also hiring a handful of vehicle technicians for a “manufacturing development program.”The AI job descriptions routinely reference Autopilot, Tesla’s self-driving technology, with phrases such as, “Build robust AI infrastructure to train and fine-tune networks for Autopilot and Optimus on large GPU clusters” and “Design and implement large-scale data processing pipelines that handle a diverse set of Autopilot-related data.”In the past few months, Tesla has ramped up efforts to get more Tesla drivers to purchase a monthly subscription for Autopilot. The company slashed Autopilot prices in April, now offers a 30-day free trial for eligible vehicles, and requires new owners to see a demo of the technology before taking delivery of their vehicles.

Tesla is also gearing up to reveal its Cybercab robotaxi on Aug. 8. It’s unclear when self-driving Tesla taxis could hit the streets, as US regulators have stepped up investigations into Autopilot’s role in several deadly crashes.Amid that regulatory pressure in the US, Tesla is working with China’s Baidu to offer a version of Autopilot’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) in the country. Musk is reportedly looking to harvest self-driving data from Chinese drivers, and possibly set up a data center in China, according to Reuters.
