Ford has extended the deadline for its EV drivers to get a free Tesla Supercharger adapter from June 30 to Aug. 31.Ford EVs got Supercharger access in February. The adapters attach to the tip of the cord at the station, allowing the CCS port on Ford vehicles (and almost all non-Tesla EVs) to connect to the Tesla-backed NACS port. In 2025, Ford and other EV makers will build the NACS port into the vehicles, meaning they’ll no longer require an adapter. Rivian is the only other non-Tesla brand that currently has Supercharger access, though all EVs will eventually get it.

Ford and Rivian have struggled to meet demand for these adapters; Ford Authority reports that some drivers are experiencing long wait times and shipping delays. For example, earlier this month, Ford notified customers who were scheduled to receive their adapters in April and May that they would not get them until June, according to a post in the Rivian owners forum. Others commented on the post with frustration about similar delays at Rivian and a lack of transparency about nebulous “supply chain issues.”PCMag reached out to Ford to comment on the change in the free adapter ordering deadline and will update this story if we hear back.Tesla could be responsible for the holdup. In an interview with Yahoo Finance in early June, Ford CEO Jim Farley said, “We really appreciate working with Tesla,” but noted that the company is still waiting on 90,000 adapters: “I texted Elon last night. We’ll see what he says.”Not helping matters, Tesla laid off its entire Supercharger team in early May amid a company-wide downsizing, though it later rehired a few people.

General Motors, Volvo, and Polestar were expected to get access to Superchargers by spring 2024, according to the Tesla website. Ahead of that deadline, Polestar told PCMag it was delayed until later in the summer. GM said the same thing but then retracted the statement and said it was on track for spring 2024. Volvo declined to comment. Spring officially ended on June 21, and drivers of all three brands still cannot power up at Tesla stations.In conversations with PCMag, these brands have declined to assign blame for the delays, be it Tesla, the brands themselves, or the routine complexities of carrying out a new initiative. However, at this rate, it seems possible that industry-wide Supercharger access, which was initially slated for completion by the end of 2024/early 2025 may take longer than expected.
