Many AI romantic chatbots are boring, cringy, and sometimes, a little creepy, but they’re also tailor-made to farm your data and do a fairly bad job at protecting it. Mozilla, the company behind Firefox browser, conducted a privacy and security survey of 11 romantic AI chatbots, including CurshOn.AI, EVA AI Chat Bot & Soulmate, Talkie Soulful AI, and Romantic AI. It finds that protecting user privacy is not a major concern. None of the 11 tested AI companions are transparent about how their AIs work. There is little to no information on protections, whether or not the human interactions are used for training, and plenty of verbiage in the terms of service that the AI bots are not responsible for anything that happens to users. (Like, say, encouraging someone to assassinate the Queen of England.)In addition, the data collected by these chatbots is potentially insecure. According to Mozilla, 73% of the bots have published no information about how they manage security vulnerabilities. Additionally, 64% haven’t published clear information about whether or not the app uses encryption, and 45% allow weak, single-digit passwords. All but one of the apps may sell or share your data; EVA AI Chat Bot & Soulmate is the only app that promises not to. Roughly half of the apps won’t let you delete your data if you leave the service. Mozilla noted that one chatbot, Romantic AI, specifically states that “communication via the chatbot belongs to the software.” That’s very reassuring.

Many of the companies will also share your data with the government or local law enforcement without requiring a court order. Romantic AI employs 24,354 trackers within the first minute of use. Mozilla also found that some of the AI bots are capable of talking about harmful topics, like violence and underage abuse. In short, all 11 romantic AI chatbots tested failed Mozilla’s security checks in one way or another. Mozilla recommends that if you use a romantic AI chatbot, that you do everything you can to protect your data by using strong passwords, use one of the bots that lets you delete personal data, and be careful about sharing personal information.
