Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 Vs. Flip 5: Attention To Finer Details, Changes, And Expected Improvements

[ad_1]

Samsung’s success in the foldable market is commendable. Over the years, the company has consistently improved upon the hardware and software that goes into making a mainstream foldable phone, capturing a significant chunk of the emerging market. This year, the company is expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Z Flip 6 – two foldables with exceptional processing power and a seamless operating system experience.

Flip 6 Vs. Flip 5: What’s Changed?

While we’ve already published the high-quality renders of both Fold 6 and Flip 6, conversations on the internet echo the similarities between them and their predecessors. For those who wish to know more about the differences between Flip 5 and Flip 6, here’s an objective view of how the new renders stack up against the 2023 flip-style foldable in collaboration with @OnLeaks.

Larger Camera Modules

Placing the Z Flip 5 (left) and the Flip 6 (right) side-by-side, there’s a noticeable difference in the size of the camera lenses. The lesser gap between the lenses and the thicker metallic rings around them could mean two things. Either the company has opted for larger camera sensors that allow more light and improve the camera’s performance, or this is a cosmetic change that doesn’t mean anything.

Last month, some reports claimed that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 could come with a 50MP primary camera, which could be larger than the current 12MP primary camera on the Flip 5 (review). Hence, from a more optimistic point of view, we would expect the larger cameras to reflect a new and improved camera system on the Flip 6. The renders also suggest a different flash module.

Thinner Hinge Covering

Hiding the hinge on the Flip 6 is a slightly thinner metallic covering. While it could be related to the hinge, we haven’t heard of any improvements in the design or the mechanism yet. Hence, it’s difficult to comment on it. Even if we consider the Flip 6 to be an incremental update at best, we would expect Samsung to strengthen the hinge and, if possible, do away with the crease that appears on the inner foldable screen.

Flat Edges

Looking at the Flip 5 (left) and Flip 6 (right) from another angle, we see a couple of changes. First, the Flip 6 appears to be sleeker, courtesy of the flat, boxy edges. The Flip 5 has rounded edges that blend into the side frame. As we mentioned in our previous post, the Flip 6 houses two microphones at the top frame. Further, the front earpiece is much larger than what users got on the last generation foldable. Even though the renders are not to scale, it looks like the volume rockers and the power button have lost some weight, too.

Yes, the company has adopted a conservative approach to this year’s foldables, but as Nothing’s CEO Carl Pei says, maintaining a similar design helps a brand establish its identity. Apple’s iPhones have done this for several years, and so have the Google Pixel phones. We expect it would be one of those cases where looking at the pictures won’t reveal much difference, but holding the phones in hand should make a difference.
