Is that a discount for Helldivers 2, the hit sci-fi shooter? Nope, it’s just a scam. On Thursday, a pair of fake Helldiver 2 games popped up on Steam, which is prompting the developer, Arrowhead Game Studios, to warn customers to be on guard. “THESE ARE FAKE. They are not made by Arrowhead but claim to be. We do not know what they contain, but they are not affiliated with us in any way,” the game studio posted in its official Discord channel.

According to SteamDB, the fake Helldiver 2 titles used to be indie games. But on Thursday, the scammers changed the titles, information, and screenshots to match the official Helldivers 2 listing on Steam. This included altering the game’s developer and publisher to Arrowhead Game Studios and PlayStation PC LLC. To lure in victims, the scammers also offered the fake Helldiver 2 titles at $12.50 and $9.50, a huge discount for a game that officially retails for $39.99. However, users noticed something was up since both fake titles had few reviews and a release date of Nov. 4, when the real game debuted on Feb. 8.

Steam’s parent, Valve, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. But the company has since removed both games from the store. In the meantime, Arrowhead Game Studios is telling consumers: “The only two genuine copies are Helldivers 2 and Helldivers 2: Super Citizen Edition. BOTH OF OUR GENUINE GAMES WERE RELEASED FEBURARY 8TH. All remaining Helldivers 2 games are fake.”

“People posting as us trying to scam people is obviously very sad and frustrating, and for that as well as for security reasons we urge you to stay clear of them,” the developer added. Scammers usually target the most popular trends, so it’s no surprise they’ve begun preying on Helldiver 2, which is now the top selling game on Steam. Back in January, fraudsters also targeted Palworld by releasing fake versions of the game on mobile app stores.
