Starlink Outage Impacts Thousands of Users

Like any internet service, Starlink isn’t immune to occasional disruptions. The SpaceX-owned satellite internet saw a brief outage Tuesday, according to a post from Starlink and users reporting issues on DownDetector. “Starlink is currently in a network outage and we are actively implementing a solution. We appreciate your patience, we’ll share an update once this issue is resolved,” Starlink wrote at approximately 10 p.m. ET Tuesday. Starlink did not share a reason for the outage in its post. About half an hour later, a follow-up post was shared notifying users that the issues had been resolved. Some, however, reported that their Starlink service did not resume at that time. Data from DownDetector shows that over 41,000 Starlink outage reports were made Tuesday night, with few ongoing into early Wednesday morning. 42% of reports said they experienced a “total blackout” of services, but a number of users reported their Starlink services operating again around 2 a.m. ET early Wednesday. Some users reported that restarting their Starlink hardware rebooted their connections.

Starlink is currently available in many countries around the world, including the US and Canada, most of Central and South America, Europe, and much of Oceania. This month, Starlink access went live across Indonesia and Fiji. In the US, a Starlink home internet subscription currently costs $120 a month or $150 a month for roaming vehicles like RVs. Starlink plans are also available for boats, with fees ranging from $250 to $5,000 a month depending on data usage needs.

Earlier this month, Starlink said its thousands of satellites currently in orbit handled the recent geomagnetic storm and were “healthy” following the event that resulted in auroras being intermittently visible around the world.Editor’s Note: DownDetector is owned by ZiffDavis, PCMag’s parent company.
