Tesla Updates Range Estimates Across Its Lineup Due to EPA Changes

[ad_1]

It’s an open secret that Tesla is generous with the numbers on its range estimates in its vehicles, but a change to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) rules for 2024 model year cars has forced Tesla to adjust the range estimates on a number of its vehicles. The EPA’s new rule, according to Electrek, requires automakers to create estimates based on all drive modes rather than the most fuel-efficient version. For example, a vehicle may have an eco mode, a normal mode, and a sport mode. Previously, automakers could give estimates based on just eco mode. Now, estimates have to consider normal and sports modes as well. This will affect multiple vehicles going into the 2024 model year, but Tesla has already adjusted its expected range on many of its vehicles as per its online configurator. However, the verbiage in the EPA’s new rules may give some context. “This new policy is applicable to new testing for 2024 model year and later vehicles. It may be applied to new testing for 2023 model year vehicles. Vehicles utilizing carry-over data may continue to use data generated under previous policy for as long as the tests are valid (i.e., no changes to the vehicle requiring new MPGe/range testing are required),” says the EPA, per Electrek. “Manufacturers who add a new configuration to a test group for 2024 and later must present new test results using this policy, but existing data can still be used if it is representative.”
