Twitter has reinstated its policy regarding misgendering or deadnaming users. The social network edited its abuse and harassment policy in April 2023 to remove mention of the rule, which had been in effect since 2018. At the time, the thought was the move was made in part because Elon Musk’s own tweets violated the policy. Now it’s back. Spotted by Ars Technica, X’s “Abuse and Harassment” page now expressly calls out the use of prior names and incorrect pronouns.“We will reduce the visibility of posts that purposefully use different pronouns to address someone other than what that person uses for themselves, or that use a previous name that someone no longer goes by as part of their transition,” it says. “Given the complexity of determining whether such a violation has occurred, we must always hear from the target to determine if a violation has occurred.”The policy requires the target of the harassment to reach out to X in order for the company to take action. The policy doesn’t remove the offending tweets, however. It merely makes them less visible on the site and prevents them from showing up in search results and on timelines. Given that the victim has to report the issue to X prior to anything being done, an offending tweet can potentially get quite a bit of traction before it’s suppressed.
