If you are seeking relief from rising gas prices and the cost of car ownership, Uber is offering $1,000 to a select few who agree to temporarily give up their cars.Uber’s One Less Car challenge, in partnership with the UK-based Behavioural Insights Team, aims to promote a car-light lifestyle. The challenge requires participants to ditch a personal car for five weeks and use alternate forms of transportation, such as walking, public transit, cycling, and ridesharing services like Uber, of course. The program is open to private car owners in Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington D.C., Miami, San Francisco, Toronto, and Vancouver. To throw your hat in the ring, you must be 18 or older, have a valid driver’s license, own a vehicle you use at least three times a week, have a bank card, and be willing to document your experience. Those who are chosen will swap car keys for a transit pass or Uber app from July 22 to Aug. 25.Submit your application on the One Less Car website. Uber will select 175 participants and give each one a $1,000 stipend, which includes $500 in Uber Cash, a $200 car rental/carsharing voucher, $300 for public transit, and a free Uber One membership.Uber tried the challenge in Australia last year and found that participants reduced their weekly number of car trips from 21 to 19.

The idea is to “figure out how to make car-light living possible for more people who want to save money, emissions, and time in traffic,” says Adam Gromis, Uber’s Global Head of Sustainability Policy. While Uber itself is focused on car trips, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said at SXSW 2024 that micromobility (like scooters) is part of a transportation vision involving fewer cars. “If you have a ride that’s two or three miles or shorter, it doesn’t make sense to have a two-ton car pull up,” Khosrowshahi said.
