Volvo is recalling its newest electric car, the EX30, after discovering a bug in the dash display software that causes it to switch into test mode and stop showing critical pieces of information.“Internal investigations have identified a potential issue on EX30 cars, which can result in a test screen being displayed on the center display screen instead of the intended driver information and infotainment,” says Volvo, according to Bloomberg, which first reported the story.

The issue only affects drivers in Europe, where the EX30 has become the second most popular electric car. US deliveries begin this summer. One EX30 driver on Reddit says the letter they received from Volvo Germany instructs them to restart the display and says the issue will be fixed via an over-the-air update or for free at the dealer. “It’s interesting that this is the first ‘official’ recognition by the company of problems with the car,” they wrote.

The EX30 is billed as a pared-down, more affordable version of Volvo’s flagship EX90 electric SUV, which has also struggled with software issues. The EX30 starts at $35,000, making it one of the few affordable EVs to debut in 2024.Volvo has sold around 35,000 EX30s but issued the recall for all 71,956 EX30 cars produced.
