In a report published in September 2023, WhatsApp updates tracker WABetaInfo informed about a new app interface dominated by the color green. In March 2024, the Meta-owned messaging platform seems to have rolled out the new theme, as several WhatsApp users are talking about it on social media and microblogging platforms. The app has changed its traditional blue color to vibrant green, surprising several users.
Why Did WhatsApp Change To A Green Theme?
WhatsApp’s shift to a green-themed interface is part of its aim to revitalize the app and its users’ experience. The platform believes that the green color better aligns with its branding and should become an integral part of the app. Hence, WhatsApp released the new color scheme as part of its latest update for iOS users. On Android, the app already had a green icon. However, its tint has been ever so slightly changed to be uniform across all platforms.
What Other Changes Are Part Of The Revamp?
Along with the change in the overall theme, iOS users will also notice several modifications in the design and layout of elements within WhatsApp, including icons, buttons, etc. Similarly, Android users should get a deeper dark mode and white space in light mode between letters, improving legibility. Another noticeable change is the WhatsApp logo appearing in the Chats tab. Further, the navigation tab will now be situated at the bottom of the screen.
For those catching up, brands and companies often revamp their overall identity and color scheme to imbibe a feeling of freshness. This prevents users from getting bored and switching to other brands or companies. From the brand’s perspective, such changes help them evolve and stay on top of the latest trends in design. However, such changes are often accompanied by a period of adjustment for users accustomed to the brand’s previous look and style.
WhatsApp Third-Party Chats Become A Reality
In a related development, WABetaInfo recently posted a screenshot of WhatsApp’s third-party chats, a feature designed specifically for users in the European Union. The screenshot contains a button to turn on third-party chats, warning users that they are messaging someone outside of WhatsApp and that the app might use a different form of end-to-end encryption. Further, the app informs that spam and scams are more common in third-party chats and that they have policies that handle data differently than WhatsApp.
In its report, the publication mentions that “the introduction of chat interoperability will finally allow WhatsApp to align with EU regulations while offering users different communication alternatives.” However, the feature remains under development and will be available as part of a future app update. We’re wondering whether WhatsApp will release this functionality for users outside the EU. Nonetheless, it would be interesting to see how the platform handles sharing images, videos, or graphics with other apps, as the sharable file size remains different.
